‘PISCINAS EN ZORROZAURRE’

Zorrozaurre is an artificial peninsula (now island) that was formed when the Deusto canal (in Bilbao, Spain) was built to the east in the 1960s and where companies and industries were mainly established. Since the end of the 80s and especially with the new century, the idea of converting it into a residential area began to develop based on Zaha Hadid's master plan.

For this project, the request is to deliver a space for public pools for the island, so that the space may serve attractively to its city neighbours, visitors and of course, its residents. The challenges of this project are sought critically to inquire about the fact of the collective and urban bathroom, recover its social, playful and sensual function, the culture of water and hygiene, based on an interpretation of the possibilities of the environment, seasonality, and advance other ways of including a program of this type in a compromised urban situation with enormous potential.

The main intention for this proposal is to reflect on the evolution of public bathroom spaces and perhaps recover, from its urban component, the unifying function of the social, recreational and cultural life of the city. Thus, the program is intended to be projected by the urbanistic means and components the site and context demand so that the building provides these needs and may improve the quality of life of the Zorrozaurre Island.
